Flow: 1480 cubic ft/sec main stem
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 41-47 degrees F West Branch Ausable River, Behind the Fly Shop at 9am.
Hatches: Early Brown Stone, Midge
UPDATE: Argentina was incredible. If ever interested in information regarding our hosting trips or want to join us on our next trips drop us a line. The local rivers are still quite cold – low 40s in the AM, but fish are starting to feed on attractor nymphs and slowly swung streamers. Warm days cloud up the river with snowmelt and bump up the flows, but for the most part the level is nice and fishable – about 1500 CFS. Not a lot of bug life as expected this time of year, but trout gotta eat., Please Call 518-946-2217 or email [email protected] for guide inquiries. Thank you and see you soon!
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Little to Zero dry fly activity right now. Black. Grey Caddis, Hendricksons, Black Stimulator #14-16, Griffiths Gnat #20-22 will be the first Dries to pop in May. Fishing Outlook: Early season conditions persist. Cold water and full river. Worth fishing through. We had a few guide trips out lately and all had success. One group of 9 anglers on a bachelor party all hooked with some of them catching handfuls of fish. Early season has us guiding early which is awesome. Exciting time of year. Temps this week are up and down, with some days in the 60s and some in the 40s. Fishing is best in the afternoons once the river can warm a few degrees. Take advantage of the early season with no crowds and the chance for a truly large brown while the rivers are full. Check out the featured pic of Reeds clients huge brown from last week.

STREAM REPORT 3/4/2024

Stream: West Branch Ausable River
Flow: 1330 cubic ft/sec main stem
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 40-44 degrees F West Branch Ausable River, Behind the Fly Shop at 9am.
Hatches: Early Brown Stone
UPDATE: The early spring has people pumped up for fishing and booking guide trips like crazy. If you want to get on the river this May and June I would get your reservation on the books asap, especially for The Dream Mile or Bush Country options! Thank you all for the support and we can’t wait to get the season kicked off in May. I (Evan) will be out of the area from March 22 (Costa Rica, family vaca and yes – trout fishing1) and then Argentina with Set Fly Fishing in Northern Patagonia with Rachel and some awesome clients returning April 14th. We will hit the ground running when we return. For guide bookings between March 23 – April 14 please email [email protected] -OR- Call 518-946-2217 during this time frame. Thank you and see you soon!
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Black Stimulator #14-16, Griffiths Gnat #20-22 Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee Black #10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph #12-18 Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama.
Fishing Outlook: Early Season temperatures have us thinking fishing early this year. The local rivers have been producing some nice early season browns during these warm days before the snow melt (whatever is left) comes through. Early season tactics take hold. Fish slow and be patient. Slowly dead drifted and swung streamers is my favorite tactic before ill fish nymphs low and slow. Fish in and around good holes as the trout will also hold in shallow head and tailout of the pools.

STREAM REPORT 10/11/23
Date: 10/16/2023
Stream: West Branch Ausable River
Flow: 639 cubic ft/sec main stem
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 50 degrees F West Branch Ausable River, Behind the Fly Shop at 9am.
Hatches: Caddis, Stoneflies, BWOs
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Elk Hair Caddis Grey, Tan, Green 10-16. Fluttering Foam Caddis 16-12, Ausable Wulff, Ausable Bomber, Haystack, Rusty Spinner, Yellow and Orange Stimulators, Chubby Chernobyl Gold, Purple, Black. Fat Albert Pink, Tan, or Yellow, Isonychias 10-14, BWOs 16-24. Nymphs: Birds Nest, Soft Hackle Hares Ear, Jig Gallop’s Hares, Girdle Bug coffee/black, Olive Napoleon (perdigon), prince nymph, pheasant tail, Iso nymphs and Caddis Pupa. Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama.
Fishing Outlook: Its really starting to feel like fall, which means streamer season. The biggest, meatiest streamers you have will produce some nice fish. We have great flows, with intermittent rain throughout the 10 day forecast so we will be finishing the season strong. Still a couple more weeks of good fishing before the snow starts flying! Afternoons are going the be the best time of day to fish, let the water warm up a little bit to get the fish active.
As we start to see some more seasonal fall temps, bug activity is definitely going to start to taper off. That doesn’t mean the dry fly action will end. The BWOs will still be popping off in the evening which can be a ton of fun to fish. BWO wets, emerges, adults, and spinners, the whole schabang. #16-#26 is the size range you should expect to see. A good work around for those tiny dries and emergers is fish a big bushy atractor fly and drop the little dry fly no longer than a foot from the big fly. If you see something rise near your atractor, set that hook! Large elk hair caddis, Ausable bombers and Wulffs, and stimulators are all perfect options for the atractor. Half the time the fish will eat the atractor as well. Large terrestrial patterns such as fat alberts and chubby chernobyls can still see some action in the fast water. Its always a good idea to drop nymphs off these big foam terrestrials. Small and slim mayfly nymphs 16-18 and caddis pupas 12-18 have been our go tos for droppers under terrestrials. Nymphing wise, girdle bugs, caddis pupas, hares ears and pheasant tails have been the best options. Tandem nymph rigs under an indicator or tightlipped are the best fishing strategy for this time of year. Bass fishing in the Adks is on. Poppers and larger streamer patterns are our go to for catching hungry smallies. Small stream brook trout fishing is both fun and adventurous. Brookies are generally less picky then most of the trout in the larger rivers. Size 12-16 parachute adams, 12-16 sized elk hair caddis, and size 14 and smaller fat alberts will have brookies leaping out of the water for them. For the most up-to-date reports give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.
Today’s Weather Forecast: Cloudy, high of 48 degrees F and a low of 42 degrees F
Lost and Found: A Scott 9′ 0″, 5 weight line fly rod, with a black Lamson Speedster Reel was found at the Whiteface Parking lot. If you lose any items on the river, or locate a lost item, don’t hesitate to either stop in or give us a call (518-946-2117) so we can help it be returned to its rightful owner.
Adirondack Anglers Outpost: Our partner shop The Adirondack Anglers is open 9am-5pm on weekends, 12pm-5pm on weekdays. The shop is located at the Four Corners in Wilmington, 5698 NYS ROUTE 86. Guiding: We have plenty of openings during the week days and the week ends, from now well into October. The Ausable has seen a large amount of water this summer, therefore, this fall will be incredible and you do not want to miss out. Our guiding service specializes in creating a fishing experience tailored for you and with plenty of fishing opportunities in the Adirondacks you definitely don’t want to miss out. We have a variety of options to include, wading trips for trout, float trips for bass, boat trips on Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, and backcountry small stream brook trout fishing. Bass fishing is on and our floats have seen nothing short of success with aggressive smallmouth. Our boat trips on the various lakes here in the Adirondack have been very successful and a great way to explore some of the best fishing lakes in the area. For those looking for more more secluded fishing options, we have two selections of private water for you. The Dream Mile and Bush Country are two sections of river privately leased by the hungry trout and only open to our guests. If you are interested in booking a trip, and/or looking for more information on guiding give us a call here at the shop, (518)-946-2117, and we are more than happy to fill in the blanks.

STREAM REPORT 10/11/23
Date: 10/11/2023
Stream: West Branch Ausable River
Flow: 1060 cubic ft/sec main stem
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 55 degrees F West Branch Ausable River, Behind the Fly Shop at 9am.
Hatches: Caddis, Stoneflies, BWOs
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Elk Hair Caddis Grey, Tan, Green 10-16. Fluttering Foam Caddis 16-12, Ausable Wulff, Ausable Bomber, Haystack, Rusty Spinner, Yellow and Orange Stimulators, Chubby Chernobyl Gold, Purple, Black. Fat Albert Pink, Tan, or Yellow, Isonychias 10-14, BWOs 16-24. Nymphs: Birds Nest, Soft Hackle Hares Ear, Jig Gallop’s Hares, Girdle Bug coffee/black, Olive Napoleon (perdigon), prince nymph, pheasant tail, Iso nymphs and Caddis Pupa. Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama.
Fishing Outlook: Flows are on the drop from the large bump in flows past few days! We got a ton of rain this past weekend and blew out the rivers but we definitely needed it. Water clarity on the West Branch is pretty good, and as it continues to drop the fishing will really turn on. Its really starting to feel like fall, which means streamer season. The biggest, meatiest streamers you have will produce some nice fish.

STREAM REPORT 10/06/23
Date: 10/06/2023
Stream: West Branch Ausable River
Flow: 205 cubic ft/sec main stem
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 55 degrees F West Branch Ausable River, Behind the Fly Shop at 9am.
Hatches: Caddis, Stoneflies, BWOs, ISOs
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Elk Hair Caddis Grey, Tan, Green 10-16. Fluttering Foam Caddis 16-12, Ausable Wulff, Ausable Bomber, Haystack, Rusty Spinner, Yellow and Orange Stimulators, Chubby Chernobyl Gold, Purple, Black. Fat Albert Pink, Tan, or Yellow, Isonychias 10-14, BWOs 16-24. Nymphs: Birds Nest, Soft Hackle Hares Ear, Jig Gallop’s Hares, Girdle Bug coffee/black, Olive Napoleon (perdigon), prince nymph, pheasant tail, Iso nymphs and Caddis Pupa. Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama.
Fishing Outlook: Cold temps are making up for the low water lately. When it gets low and clear the fishing definitely gets a little technical but the fish are still hungry. The more narrow stretches are going to have the deeper holding water. If you cover a lot of water you should find some fish. We are expecting a nice refill this weekend, the forecast for Saturday is saying 1-2″ of rain, which will bump flows quite a bit but after a few days once the flows start to drop the fishing will be prime. The biggest, meatiest streamers you have will be our fly of choice for this weekend and continuing through the fall.
Bug activity is definitely increasing every day! We are seeing action on ISO and BWO dries, and there was a very large wave of BWOs that went upstream from Wilmington to the Ski Jumps the other day, and fish continue to key in on mayfly and stonefly attractors. Yellow has been a solid color for dries on your Stimulators and fat alberts. Have been doing well on golden stonefly nymphs as well. Fish were picky but clouds of bugs is always a sight to see. Yellow caddis are also an option for dry flies, big bushy caddis dries that you can swing/skate have produced some nice fish lately. Large terrestrial patterns such as fat alberts and chubby chernobyls have been the best option for fishing on the surface if you aren’t seeing bugs or want to substitute a big foam dry for your indicator. Its always a good idea to drop nymphs off these big foam terrestrials. Small and slim mayfly nymphs 16-18 and caddis pupas 14-18 have been our go tos for droppers under terrestrials. Nymphing wise, girdle bugs, caddis pupas, hares ears and pheasant tails have been the best options. Tandem rigs with either two nymphs or a nymph and a attractor dry, are the best fishing strategy for this time of year.
