Stream Report: Thursday June 6th, 2024
Announcement: Water temps are up. Be sure to carry a thermometer and be on the lookout for warm temps. Cool weather is set to return to the region this week with much needed rain too!

Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Dry fly fishing is on! March Browns, and Grey Foxes Stoneflies, and Caddis. Dry Flies: Olive and Tan Caddis 12-16, Hendricksons 12-14, Ausable Bombers: 12-14, Ausable Wulff: 12-14, Haystacks: 12-14, March Brown Dry Flies: 12-14. Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee Black #10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph #12-18, Copper Johns: 12-18, Perdigons: Caddis Pupa’s: 12-18, Sexy Waltz Worms: 12-18, Anderson Birds of Prey: 12-18, March Brown and Hendrickson Emerges: 14-16. Fishing Outlook: June is here and with it comes peak Adirondack fly fishing. Hopper dropper rigs and stoneflies have been the primary go too for successful fishing. Focus hard on prospecting with stonefly nymphs such as girlde bugs for those trout hanging down low. As the late afternoon and evening arrive, fish eyes will start looking up. We have been seeing very consistent and productive evening hatches still being dominated primarily by March Browns. Spinner falls have been occurring so beginning the hatch with emerges and parachutes then transitioning to spinners as flies begin to drop is a very productive hatch strategy. For the most up-to-date reports give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.
UPDATE: The West Branch of the Ausable has been quite warm the passed few days. Today marks the first non 80 degree F day. Scattered rain showers are the them for this week, with roughly an inch and a half of rain predicted. If the weather holds as predicted we will see prime conditions with very productive fishing. Fishing Outlook: Adirondack Trout fishing is in full swing! Hendricksons, March Browns, BWOs, Caddis and Stoneflies are here. Fishing has been very productive with nymphing being the primary focus in the morning and afternoon then turning towards wet and dry flies in the evening. For your day time nymphing double nymph rigs are the most productive. Fishing a girdle bug under a mayfly or caddis nymph will produce the most success. As we move into the evening hatch be sure to keen in and notice how fish are feeding. Sporadic rises and splash typically hints fish are feeding on emerging bugs. In this case hatch specific emergers and wet flies are your best option. As you fish your fly remember to use slight twitches to produce predatory reactions from fish. Consistent rises means likely feeding on top. Keen in on your fish and use a dead drift and skittering combination will help you successfully catch your target fish.
