Stream: West Branch Ausable River Fishing Report

Clarity: Clear

Temperature:  62 Degrees

Weather: High of 70 Degrees F, Mostly Cloudy

Current Shop Announcements:  River is in prime condition! With a wet season across the east coast, the Adirondacks are firing off with the best conditions we have had going into June in years. Our steep gradient and rocky rivers allow for high water to clear quickly and fall to fishable levels even after a large rain event. We shine in high water! We had an absolute overhaul in our fly selection adding dozens and dozens of new patterns and almost doubling our selection. Major upgrade! – We had an awesome snow year and the mountains have a great snowpack this season which will keep the flow moving into the spring. Rain over the last few weeks have kept both air and water temps stable setting up great conditions for our spring hatches. This year we are pumped! This is really going to help the June routine. Bass Season has officially opened here in the Adirondacks, as the river temps rise going into July Bass are an excellent species to target.

Fishing Outlook: Flows have remained in our median flow range with rain the last few nights keeping the water temps down. Streamer fishing has been fantastic with fish ready for a big meal as the flows continue to go down. Large nymphs are continuing to work very well in combination with a smaller caddis or mayfly imitations. March Browns and large attractor Mayfly patterns, Ausable Wolfs and Bombers, are still making up the majority of our day time dry fly fishing. Chubby Chernobyls have been very effective over the last week, especially run as a hopper/dropper rig, Gold Hopper, Purple, and Black/Orange have been particularly effective.  Caddis hatches have been solid over the last few days with emergers being key to success into the evenings. Sulphur hatches have picked up significantly over the last week with parachutes and emergers being the flies of choice, both in the morning and evening. This time of year we can take fish more often on Skated dry flies if they aren’t committing.   The rain has kept the water nice and cool setting us up for great conditions for hatches over the coming weeks. As river temps climb going into July targeting Bass becomes an excellent alternative species. Fishing Outlook: Flows have bumped up just a bit after a good day of rain keeping us in that median flow range and dropping the water temps back down. Streamer fishing has been fantastic with fish ready for a big meal as the flows continue to go down. Large nymphs are continuing to work very well in combination with a smaller caddis or mayfly imitations. March Browns and large attractor Mayfly patterns, Ausable Wolfs and Bombers, are still making up the majority of our day time dry fly fishing. Also had some fish take some Chubby’s. Caddis hatches have been picking up over the last few days with emergers being key to success into the evenings. Sulphur hatches have picked up significantly over the last week with parachutes and emergers being the flies of choice, both in the morning and evening. This time of year we can take fish more often on Skated dry flies if they aren’t committing.   The rain has kept the water nice and cool setting us up for great conditions for hatches over the coming weeks. Current Shop Announcements:  River is in prime condition! With a wet season across the east coast, the Adirondacks are firing off with the best conditions we have had going into June in years. Our steep gradient and rocky rivers allow for high water to clear quickly and fall to fishable levels even after a large rain event. We shine in high water! We had an absolute overhaul in our fly selection adding dozens and dozens of new patterns and almost doubling our selection. Major upgrade! – We had an awesome snow year and the mountains have a great snowpack this season which will keep the flow moving into the spring. Rain over the last few weeks have kept both air and water temps stable setting up great conditions for our spring hatches. This year we are pumped! This is really going to help the June routine.
