Moody Skies, and Hungry Eyes
Stream: West Branch Ausable River Fishing Report
Date: 5/31/2025
Flow: 558cfs
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 56 Degrees
Weather: High of 56 Degrees F, Passing showers
Current Shop Announcements: Spring is here is the high peaks and the river is fishing well, although conditions are more similar to early May rather than late may. We had an absolute overhaul in our fly selection adding dozens and dozens of new patterns and almost doubling our selection. Major upgrade! – We had an awesome snow year and the mountains have a great snowpack this season which will keep the flow moving into the spring. Rain over the last few weeks have kept both air and water temps stable setting up great conditions for our spring hatches. This year we are pumped! This is really going to help the June routine.
Hatches: Stoneflies, Caddis, Hendrickson, Blue Winged Olive, March Brown, Yellow Sallies with Sulphurs making an appearance in smaller numbers
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: B.W.O Parachute 18-22, March Brown #12, Klinkhammer #12, Elk Hair Caddis 18-22 (Black, tan and green), Dark Hendrickson 10-14, Rusty Spinners #10-14, Ausable Wolfs and Ausable Bombers, Chubby Chernobyl, Sulphur Parachutes 16-20, Sulphur Emerger 16-20 Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee, Black: 10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph: 12-18, Copper Johns: 12-18, Perdigons: 12-18 Caddis Pupa’s: 12-18, Sexy Waltz Worms: 12-18, Duracell Jig 12-18 (Darker colors), Juan’s Kryptonite Caddis sz. 16-18 Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama (olive and brown), Galloup’s Dungeon (mini and regular sized, black, olive, and brown) Godzilliz Sculpin: 8-6, Chicago Overcoat: 14-10 (Sculpin, Black, White).
Fishing Outlook: Flows have evened out over the last couple of days giving us lots of well rounded fishing opportunities. March Browns are still making up the majority of our day time hatches with Blue Winged Olives being ever consistent. Also had some fish take some Chubby’s. Caddis hatches have been picking up over the last few days with emergers being key to success into the evenings. Sulphur hatches have started to pop up over the last week with parachutes and emergers being the flies of choice. This time of year we can take fish more often on Skated dry flies if they aren’t committing. Large nymphs are continuing to work very well in combination with a smaller caddis or mayfly imitations. Streamer fishing has been fantastic with fish ready for a big meal as the flows continue to go down. The rain has kept the water nice and cool setting us up for great conditions for hatches over the coming weeks. Off Season Begins…
Current Shop Announcements: Fall is in full swing here on the West Branch of the Ausable! Dropping water temps, cool nights and warm afternoons are putting off some great hatches. Cold weather and some rain and snow have put the leaves into full color and same with the trout!
Stream: West Branch Ausable River Fishing Report
Flow: 345 cfs
Clarity: Clear
Temperature: 44 Degrees F at 8am
Weather: High of 68 Degrees F, Mostly Sunny
Hatches: BWO’s, Isonychia, Cahill’s, Stoneflies, Caddis, and AM Tricos
Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Olive, Tan and Black Caddis 12-16, Ausable Bombers: 12-14, Ausable Wulff: 12-14, Haystacks: 12-14, Fat Alberts Yellow and Pink: Size 8-12, Parachute Adams 10-14, Iso Parachutes 10-12, BWO Parachutes and emergers 18-22. Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee, Black: 10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph: 12-18, Copper Johns: 12-18, Perdigons: 12-18 Caddis Pupa’s: 12-18, Sexy Waltz Worms: 12-18, Anderson Birds of Prey: 12-18, Montana Sally’s: 14-16. Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama (olive and brown).
Fishing Outlook: Water is cold and temps are stable. All of our area waters are fishing top to bottom. Temps are high 50’s in the AM with evening temps leveling out around 67. Hatches have been decent, although isolated and fish not always responding. The trout are definitely adjusting to the radical temp changes. Intermittent rain is keeping the flows in prime conditions. Larger flies are still the name of the game although the insect activity has increased so the need for Mayflies has returned with BWOs and ISOs making up the bulk of the hatches. Chubby Chernobyl’s, Fat Alberts, Ausable Wulffs and Bombers, and our subsurface girdle bugs, caddis pupas, pheasant tails, copper johns and prince nymphs fill in the rest. Some fish caught on streamers – not a ton, but some awesome fish – worth giving a shot! For the most up-to-date reports or have any questions regarding fishing strategies give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.
Adirondack Warm Water Fishing Report:
Bass and Pike fishing is on FIRE right now on the big water and also on our local Floats. Doing very well with poppers against the banks on our floats. Crushing with spinner baits from the boats. Pike have also started responding well to the fly, sinking or intermediate lines with small musky flies. Not many bites but the few you get are big! Amazing days on the water. Please give the fly shop a call with any questions regarding warm water fishing. Our Boat and Float Trips depart daily.
