    STREAM REPORT 5/1/2023

    Date: 5/1/2023

    Stream: West Branch Ausable River

Flow: 9490 cubic ft/sec main stem

    Clarity: brown

    Temperature: 40f

Hatches: Early Brown Stone, some BWO

Fishing Outlook: The river is absolutely pumping! Just shy of 10000 cfs and the Ausable and surrounding waters are in flood stage at the moment. Always happens once or twice during the spring! Stay tuned and we will fill you in when things recede. In the meantime, go fish a pond or lake etc. There has been an active bite on most flatwater bodies. Call for more details and we can dial you in. This is one reason we always recommend coming up to the ADK with you canoe on your car. If the river conditions are not ideal, the flat water opportunities are abundant.

Upcoming Events: The opening of our partner shop, The Anglers Outpost, is slowly approaching! All the information will be coming out shortly. Very excited to unveil the extension of our business and cater to a wider variety of anglers of all disciplines. Exciting stuff!

We do have openings for guiding for May, so definitely get your day on the books. A few prime dates for private water as well as guides for Salmon and Chateaugay. If you have been fishing up here a while and want to be introduced to some new routines, this is the best way to do it. Call us at 5189462117 and we can fill in the blanks!

    Shop is open daily 9-5!

    STREAM REPORT 4/30/2023

    Date: 4/30/2023

    Stream: West Branch Ausable River

Flow: 917 cubic ft/sec main stem

    Clarity: clear

    Temperature: 40-44f

Hatches: Early Brown Stone, some BWO

Fishing Outlook: Not a lot of change lately since our previous report other than reduced flows and more fish!  The state and county has been stocking up and down all rivers in the north country. The Ausable has started picking up because of the stocking, obviously, but also because the temps, clarity and decent weather  lead to more active feeding. Some nice fish have been caught below the Dam as well as in the deep wintering spots up river. We are fishing exclusively streamers and nymphs, dark color streamers and variety of attractor nymphs like Mops and Girdle Bugs. Low and slow is the ticket and fish during the warmer times of the days. We have had some cool evenings and frosty mornings so you’ll want the day to heat up a bit before heading out for the peak time of day, approx noon – 5.

    STREAM REPORT 4/13/2023

    Date: 4/13/2023

    Stream: West Branch Ausable River

    Flow:

    Main Stem: 3790 cubic ft/sec

    East Branch: 2290 cubic ft/sec

West Branch: (Main – East) 1500 cubic ft/sec

    Clarity: slightly off

Hatches: Early Brown Stone, nothing to write home about

Fishing Outlook: Early season conditions continue with high, cool water due to run off. The warm nice weather has sped up the snow melt on the Ausable so I would hit the northern rivers and lower lying streams that have more suitable flow. One of the guides, Reed Atkinson, @atkinsonrods, caught a 24” brown recently on a Tan Mop Fly. It was one of the only flies he was having success on during the day, and caught what will most likely be a seasons best catch. Unreal trout!  ! We had a brutal rain the other day with over an inch falling in some nasty thunderstorms. This time of year our area is generally quite slow fishing in the rivers and your best opportunity is going to hit the iced out lakes and ponds. Some of the best Stillwater fishing of the year can be had in the early weeks of April into May. If you are dying to hit the river, fish streamers and attractor nymphs all fished slowly and vary your color choices. A favorite early season fly of mine is the Sparkle Minnow, dead drifted or slowly swung, twitched etc. But taking as much time as you can in each seam and pocket is ideal.

Upcoming Events: We have a very exciting year ahead of us, with an expansion into our partner shop at the old Two Fly Shop location. We purchased the building and will be unveiling a lot of new happenings in the coming weeks. We will continue to run the Hungry Trout Fly Shop as we have for the past 30 years, and in addition we will expand into our partner shop in the center of Wilmington and offer a new mix of fly and tackle. Stay Tuned! Fish On! Shops will be opening full time on May 1st!
