    STREAM REPORT 7/01/2023

    Date: 7/01/2023

    Stream: West Branch Ausable River

Flow: 256 cubic ft/sec West Branch, 135 cubic ft/sec East Branch, 391 cubic ft/sec main stem

    Clarity: Clear

Temperature: 65 degrees F (as of 9:30am, likely to increase) West Branch Ausable River, Behind the Fly Shop

Hatches: Caddis, Stoneflies, BWOs, Sulphurs, Green Drakes, Hexagenia

Hot Flies: Dries: Elk Hair Caddis Grey, Tan, Green 10-16. Fluttering Foam Caddis 16-12, Ausable Wulff, Ausable Bomber, Haystack, Rusty Spinner, Yellow and Orange Stimulators, Chubby Chernobyl Gold, Purple, Black. Fat Albert Pink, Tan, or Yellow, Hexagenia spinners, and BWO parachutes.  Nymphs: Birds Nest, Soft Hackle Hares Ear, Jig Gallop’s Hares, Girdle Bug coffee/black, Olive Napoleon (perdigon), prince nymph, pheasant tail, hexagenia nymphs and Caddis Pupa.     Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Great Ghosts, Dhali Lama.

Fishing Outlook: Flow rates on the Ausable and surrounding rivers are still prime, however, the water temperature is still on the increase. With nightly temps looking hot we will likely see 70 degree water temperatures of the next week. The weather outlook for the next week forecasts sunny and warm with on and possibility for daily thunder showers spanning over the next 10 days. If you are planning on hitting the trout rivers, early mornings (starting at first light-30 minutes before sunrise) is going to be the best option. Large terrestrial and mayfly are producing large numbers of fish. Nymphing wise, girdle bugs, caddis pupas, hares ears and pheasant tails have been the best options. Fishing tandem rigs with either two nymphs or a nymph and a dry, have been the most productive. Don’t sweat about the water temps. There are still plenty of fishing opportunities to happen. Bass fishing in the Adks is on. Poppers and larger streamer patterns are our go to for catching hungry smallies. Small stream brook trout fishing is both fun and adventurous. Brookies are generally less picky then most of the trout in the larger rivers. Size 12-16 parachute adams, 12-16 sized elk hair caddis, and size 14 fat alberts will have brookies leaping out of the water for them. For the most up-to-date reports give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.

Warm Water Temps: As we come into July and August we will begin to see our annual increase in water temperatures on the Ausable and the surrounding rivers. These increases in water temps are completely normal for this time of year and are caused by a variety of factors such as, warm nights, less consistent rain fall, low river levels, etc. It is important to carry a thermometer and watch for water temps that increase above 68 degrees Fahrenheit. When water temperatures increase to 68-70 degrees F, trout begin to exert a tremendous amount of more energy which creates a high amount of physical stress on the fish. Hooking into a trout in warm water causes them to build up fatal levels of lactic acid. Fish often times will not even survive making it to the net, and the fish that manage to make it to the net, will not survive release. In the event you are on the river and water temps hit above 68 degrees F don’t fret it, just change gears. Here in the Adirondacks we have a vast variety of fishing opportunities. When the larger trout waters become warm, the bass are in their prime and hungry. For those who still want to hit some trout fishing and are adventurous hit the high peaks or other wilderness areas for some blue line brook trout adventures. If you have any questions regarding water temperature and other fishing opportunities in the Adirondacks give us a call here at the shop 518-946-2117, and we will get you dialed and back out on the water.

    STREAM REPORT 6/19/2023

    Date: 6/19/2023

    Stream: West Branch Ausable River

Flow: 1230 cubic ft/sec main stem

    Clarity: Murky/Clearing

Temperature: 55-60 West Branch Ausable River

Hatches: Caddis, Stoneflies, BWOs, Sulphurs, Green Drakes, Hexagenia

Hot Flies: Dries: Elk Hair Caddis Grey, Tan, Green 10-16. Fluttering Foam Caddis 16-12, Ausable Wulff, Ausable Bomber, Haystack, Rusty Spinner, Yellow and Orange Stimulators, Chubby Chernobyl Gold, Purple, Black. Fishing Outlook: In the shadow of yesterday’s high flows, flow rates are on the decline and clarity is on the rise. We should be seeing prime flows within a few days. In the meantime staying subsurface and having a  healthy variety of flies is ideal. Streamers along with larger heavier nymphs, and more hatch worthy nymph patterns will allow you to cover all the bases as the water clears and flows decrease. Fish are still likely along to bank, so approach the water with care and don’t hesitate to fish at your feet. Weather outlook looks beautiful with sunny skies and increasing temperatures, lasting until Friday. Definitely get out and hit the Ausable for trout, and don’t hesitate to check out your favorite bass spot. Season is open and fish are hungry. Fishing Outlook: Flows on the Ausable and surrounding rivers are up significantly. The Ausable is pumping. Fishing from shore is the best and safest option right now. Water is high but temps are good and fish are there. Target along the bank, and fish at your feet. During high water fish search for slower water along the banks. Bigger and darker streamer patterns such as olive wooly buggers and big sparkle minnows are the best bet. Nymphing with larger nymph patterns such as mops and stones are the best option. Weather outlook looks beautiful with sunny skies and increasing temperatures. Should help ease the flows a bit and bring back prime flows on the Ausable. For the most up-to-date reports give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.
