Fishing Outlook: Adirondack Trout fishing is in full swing! Hendricksons, March Browns, BWOs, Caddis and Stoneflies are here. Fishing has been very productive with nymphing being the primary focus in the morning and afternoon then turning towards wet and dry flies in the evening. For your day time nymphing double nymph rigs are the most productive. Fishing a girdle bug under a mayfly or caddis nymph will produce the most success. As we move into the evening hatch be sure to keen in and notice how fish are feeding. Sporadic rises and splash typically hints fish are feeding on emerging bugs. In this case hatch specific emergers and wet flies are your best option. As you fish your fly remember to use slight twitches to produce predatory reactions from fish. Consistent rises means likely feeding on top. Keen in on your fish and use a dead drift and skittering combination will help you successfully catch your target fish.

UPDATE: The local rivers are still quite cold and there is lots of water in the system. The flows are 1500 (main stem) so they are very fishable but some areas are washed out. We are still fishing nymphs exclusively. Very mild temps the next week, steady low 60s will keep things progressing. Some rain in forecast, just enough to maintain water levels. Please Call 518-946-2217 or email flyfishing@hungrytrout.com for guide inquiries. Thank you and see you soon!

Fishing Outlook: Still fishing nymphs and streamers on most rivers in the region with some dry fly activity coming to life on the Chateaugay, Salmon and Chazy. Saranac should be any day now as well. Peak season is about to pop off in the ADK and ide have a variety of dry flies ready and your hatch specific flies in tow. Quill Gordon, Hendricksons, and Grannom Caddis will be first to hatch. Always be ready for decent spinner falls for the Hendrickson hatch. They don’t always come to fruition but when they do its the best nights of the year. Ide expect fishing mostly nymphs and streamers for the time being.

UPDATE: Argentina was incredible. If ever interested in information regarding our hosting trips or want to join us on our next trips drop us a line. The local rivers are still quite cold – low 40s in the AM, but fish are starting to feed on attractor nymphs and slowly swung streamers. Warm days cloud up the river with snowmelt and bump up the flows, but for the most part the level is nice and fishable – about 1500 CFS. Not a lot of bug life as expected this time of year, but trout gotta eat., Please Call 518-946-2217 or email flyfishing@hungrytrout.com for guide inquiries. Thank you and see you soon!

Fishing Outlook: Early season conditions persist. Cold water and full river. Worth fishing through. We had a few guide trips out lately and all had success. One group of 9 anglers on a bachelor party all hooked with some of them catching handfuls of fish. Early season has us guiding early which is awesome. Exciting time of year. Temps this week are up and down, with some days in the 60s and some in the 40s. Fishing is best in the afternoons once the river can warm a few degrees. Take advantage of the early season with no crowds and the chance for a truly large brown while the rivers are full. Check out the featured pic of Reeds clients huge brown from last week.

As soon as the ice is out Reed and Max will have the bite dialed and be ready to go. April is also a great time for your chance to get on some really nice Adk browns and hit some of Lake Champlain trips for trophy Smallmouth: wicked spey opportunity. UPDATE: The early spring has people pumped up for fishing and booking guide trips like crazy. If you want to get on the river this May and June I would get your reservation on the books asap, especially for The Dream Mile or Bush Country options! Thank you all for the support and we can’t wait to get the season kicked off in May. I (Evan) will be out of the area from March 22 (Costa Rica, family vaca and yes – trout fishing1) and then Argentina with Set Fly Fishing in Northern Patagonia with Rachel and some awesome clients returning April 14th. We will hit the ground running when we return. For guide bookings between March 23 – April 14 please email FLYFISHING@HUNGRYTROUT.COM -OR- Call 518-946-2217 during this time frame. Thank you and see you soon!

Fishing Outlook: Early Season temperatures have us thinking fishing early this year. The local rivers have been producing some nice early season browns during these warm days before the snow melt (whatever is left) comes through. Early season tactics take hold. Fish slow and be patient. Slowly dead drifted and swung streamers is my favorite tactic before ill fish nymphs low and slow. Fish in and around good holes as the trout will also hold in shallow head and tailout of the pools.
