With the passing of the spawn, the official opening of Franklin County Bass fishing season, and the coming heat Bass fishing is predicted to be on FIRE! Both the Hungry Trout Fly Shop and our sister shop the Adirondack Anglers Outpost are fully stocked with warm water needs. Our current suggestion is to focus popper patterns with a chartreuse coloration against and along banks. The purpose of poppers is to disturb water to entice fish. Fishing Outlook: A major heat wave has arrived and will remain in the region until Friday. We do advise against fishing the West Branch of the Ausable during the heat wave to avoid impeding fatal stress on trout. However, hot temperatures appear to only remain until Thursday with rain predicted after. Although heat stress will occur, with this warm temperature we will likely see sudden thundershowers once a day, that do have the opportunity to bring much needed water to help sustain the fish until the heat passes. Our current advice is, stick to those small Brook Trout Streams (which do have the opportunity for incredible fishing, with some being 30+ fish days!) and warm water fishing which will be on fire   For the most up-to-date reports or have any questions regarding fishing strategies give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.

Announcement: PRIME FISHING CONDITIONS ARE HERE!!!!! Read below for an update on conditions and get out on the water. Fly Shop is open 9-5 daily ready to stock you up on supplies or feed your brain with necessary fishing knowledge. Please note that warm weather conditions will make the Ausable un-fishable because of water temperatures. However, the warm weather brings a ton of fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass, pike and other warm water opportunities.

Hot Flies: Dry Flies: Dry fly fishing is on! Sulphurs,  Stoneflies, Caddis, and attractors. Dry Flies: Parachute Sulphurs, Olive and Tan Caddis 12-16, Ausable Bombers: 12-14, Ausable Wulff: 12-14, Haystacks: 12-14, .  Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee Black #10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph #12-18, Copper Johns: 12-18, Perdigons: Caddis Pupa’s: 12-18, Sexy Waltz Worms: 12-18, Anderson Birds of Prey: 12-18, March Brown and Hendrickson Emerges: 14-16.  Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama.

Fishing Outlook: June is here and with it comes peak Adirondack fly fishing. Hopper dropper rigs and stoneflies have been the primary go too for successful fishing. Focus hard on prospecting with stonefly nymphs such as girlde bugs for those trout hanging down low. As the late afternoon and evening arrive, fish eyes will start looking up. March Browns are on the decline but June is the still the season for mayflies and terrestrials with Sulphurs and BWO dominating the mayfly realm. Blind casting Hoppers and Big Attractor May and Caddisfly adults into pockets is a consistent and fun strategy to us while fishing the Ausable. While standing in pools be on the look out for a variety of Mayflies hatching and use your eyes to find the best fly suited for it. For the most up-to-date reports or have any questions regarding fishing strategies give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.

UPDATE: Prime fishing conditions are here and should remain until Sunday. Monday afternoon the next heat wave hits and the Main rivers will be in the high 70s and should not be fished until the heat wave peaces out and cooler temps return. Plan on fishing smaller creeks and start focusing on warm water species as we transition into summer fishing. So many good options – well show you where. Outlooking weather reports are reporting high 80 degrees weather beginning Monday afternoon of next week. However, prime conditions are here and will remain in through the weekend so defiantly do not miss the next few days of high quality fishing conditions. We have plenty of open guide slots for the last week of June so give us a call! Please Call 518-946-2217 or email flyfishing@hungrytrout.com for guide inquiries. Thank you and see you soon!
