Major upgrade! – We had an awesome snow year and the mountains have a great snowpack this season which will keep the flow moving into the spring. Keep in mind that the occasional snow storm and freezing rain are common here in April so keep safety in mind when wading! The last few winters we haven’t been so lucky. This year we are pumped! This is really going to help the June routine.

    Off Season Begins…

Current Shop Announcements: Fall is in full swing here on the West Branch of the Ausable! Dropping water temps, cool nights and warm afternoons are putting off some great hatches. Cold weather and some rain and snow have put the leaves into full color and same with the trout!

Stream: West Branch Ausable River Fishing Report

    Flow: 345 cfs

    Clarity: Clear

    Temperature:  44 Degrees F at 8am

Weather: High of 68 Degrees F, Mostly Sunny

Hatches: BWO’s, Isonychia, Cahill’s, Stoneflies, Caddis, and AM Tricos

Hot Flies:   Dry Flies: Olive, Tan and Black Caddis 12-16, Ausable Bombers: 12-14, Ausable Wulff: 12-14, Haystacks: 12-14, Fat Alberts Yellow and Pink: Size 8-12, Parachute Adams 10-14, Iso Parachutes 10-12, BWO Parachutes and emergers 18-22.  Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee, Black: 10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph: 12-18, Copper Johns: 12-18, Perdigons: 12-18 Caddis Pupa’s: 12-18, Sexy Waltz Worms: 12-18, Anderson Birds of Prey: 12-18, Montana Sally’s: 14-16. Fishing Outlook: Water is cold and temps are stable. All of our area waters are fishing top to bottom. Temps are high 50’s in the AM with evening temps leveling out around 67. Hatches have been decent, although isolated and fish not always responding. The trout are definitely adjusting to the radical temp changes. Intermittent rain is keeping the flows in prime conditions. Larger flies are still the name of the game although the insect activity has increased so the need for Mayflies has returned with BWOs and ISOs making up the bulk of the hatches. Chubby Chernobyl’s, Fat Alberts, Ausable Wulffs and Bombers, and our subsurface girdle bugs, caddis pupas, pheasant tails, copper johns and prince nymphs fill in the rest. Some fish caught on streamers – not a ton, but some awesome fish – worth giving a shot! For the most up-to-date reports or have any questions regarding fishing strategies give us a call here at the Fly Shop at 518-946-2117.

    Adirondack Warm Water Fishing Report:

Bass and Pike fishing is on FIRE right now on the big water and also on our local Floats.  Doing very well with poppers against the banks on our floats. Amazing days on the water.  Please give the fly shop a call with any questions regarding warm water fishing. Our Boat and Float Trips depart daily.

Current Shop and Guided Fishing Updates:

The next 10 days are showing prime trout fishing conditions, so our guides are focusing hard  and so pumped to be back on the cold water programs. • 5 tips for Fall Fishing Success

5 tips for Fall Fishing Success

5 Tips For Fall Fishing Stardom

    By: Jake Van de Valk

    1. Fish Variety of Tactics: While Dry Flies are still in play long into the fall, Streamers become increasingly effective, and nymphs are always on the menu as trout are fattening up for Autumn. Even though water may be low and clear trout become more aggressive and are likely to react to fly patterns that may not be typical for the conditions. Do you ever fish an articulated streamer in shallow riffles? You should try….

    2. Give your flies movement: Adding movement to your flies (yes, dries and nymphs also) is a very important and often utilized tactic in pocket water. A tactic that is rarely utilized by anglers visiting our home waters.  It is one of the most successful tweaks you can add to your strategy when dead drifting various patterns were ineffective. Before you change your fly – change how you fish it!Also, with leaves and other debris coming down into the river adding some motion or wake behind your fly helps it stand out and gives Trout something to cue in on. Last but not least = Isonychia, BWO and Caddis are strong swimmers!

    3. Daytime may be Gametime! While there will still be hatches in the  mornings and evenings, the combination of lower temps, and later sunrises with earlier sunsets makes the middle of the day bite that much more productive. As the season progresses the best bite window will shift later into the day after the water has had a chance to warm a few degrees. Does not always benefit the outing to get out there before the breakfast bell.

    4. Be Ready to be Stealthy : The fall season can throw many curveballs. One zone your nymphing pocket water with a girdle bug or fishing a chubby, and around the next bend are fish getting techy eating Blue Winged Olives. Be ready to implement a stealthier approach with a longer leader, careful presentation (often downstream), and flies that match the hatch. It is also not uncommon to have nice fish feeding on tiny BWO in turbulent water.

    5. Conditions Change Fast: Yes, this is a lame tip. BUT weather in the Adirondacks can change dramatically. Evenings are often in the 40’s and day times in the 70s and a ‘chance of rain” can mean cool showers on and off all day. We have one night in the forecast this week with a 28 degree temperature swing. Be prepared to dress warm in the am with the ability to shed LOTS of layers during the day and be ready for precipitation. When the shade lines creep back across the streambed Brrrr.

Proper Preparation = Maximum enjoyment – Albert Einstein

Current Shop Announcements: A few leaves have started to change! The beginning of fall fishing has arrived. Crisp mornings, mayflies and warm afternoons. The best!

Stream: West Branch Ausable River Fishing Report

    Temperature: 61 Degrees F at 10am

Weather: High of 66 Degrees F, Cloudy/light rain

Hatches: Isonychia, Cahill’s, Stoneflies, Caddis, BWO, and AM Tricos

Hot Flies:   Dry Flies: Olive and Tan Caddis 12-16, Ausable Bombers: 12-14, Ausable Wulff: 12-14, Haystacks: 12-14, Fat Alberts Yellow and Pink: Size 8-12, .  Nymphs: Black Stoneflies 12-16, Girdle Bug Coffee Black #10-12 Pheasant tail 12-18, Prince Nymph #12-18, Copper Johns: 12-18, Perdigons: Caddis Pupa’s: 12-18, Sexy Waltz Worms: 12-18, Anderson Birds of Prey: 12-18, Montana Sally’s: 14-16. Streamers: Dark colored Wooly Buggers (Olive or Black preference), Sparkle Minnow Conehead, Articulated Sparkle Minnows and JIG, classic Mickey Finns and Grey Ghosts, Dhali Lama.

Fishing Outlook: Water is cold and temps are stable. All of our area waters are fishing top to bottom. Temps are high 50’s in the AM with evening temps leveling out around 67. Hatches have even decent, although isolated and fish not always responding. The trout are definitely adjusting to the radical temp changes. Intermittent rain is keep the flows in prime conditions. Larger flies are still the name of the game although the insect activity has increased so the need for Mayflies has returned with BWO, ISO, and Cahill’s in rotation.
